The Tabernas Desert

The Desierto de Tabernas is considered to be the only real desert in Europe and is located about 30 kilometres to the north of the city of Almeria. It is a wilderness protected area and measures approximately 11,625 hectares in size. The area receives very little rainfall throughout the year and has a high level of sun exposure resulting in the high temperatures. On the average, the Tabernas Desert receives only 24 centimetres of rain per year which nurture some of the scarce plant and animal species.

The desert is situated between two mountain ranges which shelter it from winds and rain which have also helped give way to the dry climate. Much of the landscape is made up of sandstone and coupled with the scarce vegetation, is unable to retain much water during the downpours that do occur. Badlands are formed in the area due to the rapid erosion of the water resulting in some spectacular topography. Small creek beds and other indents temporarily fill with water and harbour some of the desert life. These areas are home to hedgehogs, as well as several bird species including finches, larks and grouse.
The Tabernas Desert has been used to film many old Westerns, such as A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, and has also been used in several music videos. It has long been a tourist attraction for this reason, as well as for the extraordinary landscape that it has to offer.
