Platform of Almeria

Almeria has some of the clearest skies in all of Europe, as well as the highest number of sunshine hours and the lowest rainfall. For this reason, Almeria is home to Europe’s biggest solar energy plant called the Solar Platform of Almeria, or Plataforma Solar de Almeria (PSA). This is a large area established for the research and development of solar technology, and aims to contribute to the world’s sustainable future.

The PSA is doing a lot of testing with solar power, and hopes to contribute to the conservation of European energy resources, as well as to the climate and environment. They aim to reduce the costs of solar powered technology and hope to promote the technology world wide.

The Platform of Almeria was first established in the 1980’s in the Tabernas Desert of Almeria. The location for the solar energy plant was chosen primarily because of the high amount of sunshine in Almeria which most resembles that of the developing solar-belt countries which have a lot of solar power potential.
