Historical Sites In Almeria
Almeria is cultural city having been inhabited since the Bronze Age with many different occupations. The city offers visitors many historical sites with remains from ancient Phoenician, Roman and Carthaginian settlements.
The Alcazaba is an Arabic fortress located in the Historical Quarters of the city which is worth a visit. The fortress was built on the top of a hill to offer good views and protection against enemies, and features amazing views of the surroundings. At the foot of the fortress is the Muslim Medina which was built in 955. The Historical Quarters of Almeria are also home to remains of the Moor occupation of the city. ‘La Plaza Vieja’, or the Old Square is where visitors can see the Town Hall, the Alcazaba Gardens, the San Juan church and the old Arabic baths. The San Juan Church contains the remains of a 12th century tomb as well as a 15th century mosque wall which are of particular interest to visitors.
Almeria is home to several old churches and cathedrals of which many date back to the 16th century. The ‘Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación’ Cathedral’s tower is the symbol of the city and was built in the fifteenth century. The San Juan Parish Church was built in the 16th century and is one of the best historical sites in the area. It was built on top of the remains of a tenth century mosque, and is located in the ‘Plaza de las Chafarinas’.
There are several museums and architectural buildings in Almeria that are also worth visiting which are dotted throughout the city. Stately homes from the Christian period still remain, and are impressive in their grandeur. Almeria features many interesting archaeological and architectural sites which should be seen when visiting the area.
